Council for Exceptional Children

2009 Outstanding Graduate Student Member of the Year Award

Sara Aronin

Doctoral Student, Exceptional Education

University of Central Florida

Orlando, Florida

In her first year in the doctoral program at the University of Central Florida, Sara Aronin was selected to work with the Toni Jennings Exceptional Education Institute. During her time with the institute she developed a strong passion in working in the area of science and special education. Through her own initiative, she began to develop a relationship with the NASA Education Resource Center (ERC) combining her knowledge in science with the field of special education. Ms. Aronin’s areas of unique interests are ones that less than a dozen researchers in the United States focus on related to access for students with disabilities in science. She has already provided numerous hours of work in this area in coordination with the NASA ERC’s and she is aligned to be a national spokesperson in this field via her presentations at national conferences in science and special education. Ms. Aronin is also an intern for the Personnel Center Project at NASDSE as part of an OSEP funded Special Education Faculty Needs Assessment Project, and for the past 3 years she has worked on the new state-of-the-art virtual classroom that will prepare teachers in an environment that does not put children at-risk. She serves in a number of leadership positions within CEC, including Senior Student Representative for the Teacher Education Division. In this role she increased the number of doctoral students who attend and present at the TED Kaleidoscope session and added an evaluation component to the session for graduate students to receive feedback on their presentations to improve their skills in the profession. Ms. Aronin is also the Student Representative to Florida CEC. She will graduate this August with her Ph.D. in Exceptional Education. Sara Aronin is the next generation of leaders that is needed in special education and she is well positioned to make a change in our field.

The Outstanding CEC Student Member of the Year Award is presented to an undergraduate and a graduate student member who have made outstanding contributions to children with exceptionalities and CEC.

I am Kimberly Pawling, the current FL-SCEC student Children's Advocacy Network (CAN) representative for Florida. The FL State Student CAN coordinator is a TWO-YEAR Student Leadership position. I am presently beginning my second term as FL SCEC CAN Coordinator.

What does that mean to you? TWO VERY IMPORTANT ITEMS:

1. I need each student chapter to select/elect/whichever a member of the student chapter to serve as the chapter's CAN representative. The individual will receive my emails and can communicate action items with his or her individual chapter.

2. Florida Student Board is looking for an individual to serve as the next Student State CAN Representative. We will be reviewing applications soon. If you are interested in serving as CAN representative, please let me know.
